-86℃、-40℃、-25℃:
Sample Characteristics Behind Temperature Zone Partitioning
Temperature gears are not arbitrary. Each temperature step corresponds to the requirements of a class of storage objects for "active retention time".
Four temperature steps
| Temperature zone | Common Salutation | Typical Save Objects |
|---|---|---|
| 2 ~ 8℃ | Refrigerated | Daily storage of drugs, reagents, vaccines |
| 8 ~ 20℃ | Cool storage | Pharmaceuticals requiring cool storage |
| -25 ~ -40℃ | Low-temp freezing | Food ingredients, aquatic products and some biological products |
| -60 ~ -86℃ | ultra-low temperature | Long-term preservation of viruses, bacteria, cells, plasma, semen, biological products, etc. |
Why is the ultra-low temperature set near -86°C?
In the ultra-low temperature range, the biochemical reactions and ice crystal activity inside the sample are pressed to a very low level, making long-term storage possible. Long-term preservation needs common to blood stations, hospitals, CDCs, research institutes and bioengineering institutions generally fall within this range. This is also the reason why the ultra-low temperature storage box uses -25/-40/-60/-86 ℃ as the set temperature of the fourth gear - the same equipment covers different requirements from medium-low temperature to ultra-low temperature.
Where are the lower temperatures used?
Special materials and some scientific research scenarios require a storage temperature lower than -86 °C, and the cryogenic section equipment can cover -135 °C and below; high-quality aquatic products in pelagic fisheries generally use -65 °C cryogenic storage. The lower the temperature zone, the higher the structure and energy consumption of the refrigeration system, and it can be selected according to actual needs, without being blindly low.
What choosing the wrong temperature zone means
- Temperature not enough: storage time is discounted, sample activity decreases with time
- Excess Temperature: Purchasing and operating costs increase in vain
- Mixing of multiple equipment temperature zones: Second confirmation is required when transferring samples, and management costs increase
